Horizon Science Academy New Bedford Opens With Celebration and Community Support

New Bedford, MI — After six months of preparation and renovations, Horizon Science Academy New Bedford (HSA NB), a tuition-free Pre-K–8th grade public charter school, officially opened its doors on August 27, 2025.

Formerly New Bedford Academy, the school was acquired by Concept Schools on March 1, 2025, and has since been transformed into Concept’s 35th school, authorized by Ferris State University.

A Fresh Start for Students and Families

What was once described as a “dull, cold building” has been redesigned into a warm and welcoming space for students, families, and staff. Visitors at the opening event praised the school’s bright new look, updated classrooms, and family-friendly atmosphere.

“The colors—it’s awesome,” said James Delgado, an 8th grader. Parent Sarah Rice, whose three children attend HSA NB, added: “I love the office. I’m glad that Ms. Young and Mrs. Walters get a nice office. I love the remodeling.”

Other families noted improvements to communication, curriculum, and the school’s new focus on STEM education. “A great new experience now that it’s a STEM school,” said Kenydi, a 5th grade student.
